Setting up patron help

SirsiDynix Portfolio delivers a help file for library users. This file is customizable so that you can add to, remove from, or edit its content to meet your library's policies and configuration on a profile-by-profile basis. You can make this Help content available to your library users. When you enable patron help for a search profile, a Help link will appear in the header.

You can also choose to create your own help file that you can upload for library users to access from the Help link.

You can turn the patron Help link on or off for each profile.

To display delivered Help for a profile

The Help link is enabled by default for all delivered search profiles and for all new profiles you add.

From the Admin console, choose Manage Profiles.

For the profile you want to work with, choose the Select menu > Configure Custom Page Elements.

Under "Custom Page Content", select Enable Patron Help Link (for details, see Fields: Configure Custom Page Elements).

Important: If you clear the Enable Patron Help Link field, the Help link will not display on the search profile.

Note: You do not need to enter a Custom Help URL to display the delivered help content.

Save your changes.

To display your own Help for a profile

Create and save your Help in any format your patrons can access (for example, HTML or PDF).

From the Admin console, choose Manage Profiles.

For the profile you want to work with, choose the Select menu > Configure Custom Page Elements.

Under "Custom Page Content", select Enable Patron Help Link (for details, see Fields: Configure Custom Page Elements).

Important: If you clear the Enable Patron Help Link field, the Help link will not display on the search profile.

Specify the location of your Help:

If you choose to upload your Help onto the SirsiDynix Portfolio server, select your Help file for File Uploading (Manage Profiles > Configure Custom Page Elements). (For details, see Specifies the image, such as a library logo, that library users see when logging in to their account. The image is placed at the top of the login box, and the login box adjusts to the size of the image. You can use the slider to adjust the size of the image before saving the settings..)

Choose Upload.

Copy the Uploaded File URL that appears (/custom/web/<filename>), and paste it in the Custom Help URL field under "Custom Page Content." (For details, see Custom Page Content.)

Save your changes.

If you choose to host your help file on another server, enter that URL in the Custom Help URL field under "Custom Page Content" (Manage Profiles > Configure Custom Page Elements > Next). (For details, see Custom Page Content.)
